Situated in the lively coastal resort of Herne Bay, Hampton Pier Yacht Club
offers every facility for the keen dinghy sailor.
With a full
programme of club racing, cruising and fun sailing, members of all
ages and abilities take every advantage to sail in the open waters
close by the old stone pier at Hampton.
A varied
social programme and a well stocked bar ensure the friendly club
atmosphere remains when sailing has finished for the day.
The Club is close to
free car parking and the modern clubhouse on the beach boasts everything
needed for the comfort of sailors and spectators alike.
Ample
dinghy parking and a gently shelving beach make launching easy whilst
an electric winch and concrete ramp make recovering even the largest
dinghies just as simple.

HPYC NEWS
Holiday Week is almost upon us, but first there is a cup to be won
and
some race training cunningly
timed to take
place earlier the same day. We have news of the Club Regatta and
we now have Wi-Fi in the Club.
On Saturday 7 August the
bar
will be open from 7.30pm and our monthly Bar Quiz starts at
8.30pm. Quiz teams
should be a maximum of 6;
you can either bring a team or make one up when you get here; entry is
£1 per person. The quiz is open to all members but please feel free to
bring friends; just remember to sign them in at the
bar as a guest.
Pre-race training takes place on Sunday 8 August. Turn up
at 10am for on
the water training on how to make the most of starts and sailing to the
windward buoy. You must have some basic sailing skills. If
you don't have a boat the Club Toppers are available.
At 12pm on the same day we race for the Hampton Cup.
HOLIDAY
WEEK
Monday 9 to Friday 13 August will be a fun-filled
week of activities on and off the water. Holiday Week
is a fantastic
way to make friends and to improve your confidence on the water. Many
children have learnt about boat handling without even realising it! New ideas and suggestions for the
week
will be very welcome. We meet at 10am on Monday to plan the
week, but
a draft (and so far incomplete) programme is available here.
The programme will be updated during the week so keep checking back.
Holiday Week includes a talk on Seamanship Theory on Thursday
12 August. This is for anyone interested in learning about
seamanship; effect of tides, currents, moorings, preventing collisions.
It will be an informal talk and discussion based on the RYA seamanship
and day sail modules. Designed to be fun as its Holiday Week, this
event is presented by round Britain sailor, Jack Daly.
On Saturday 14 August we have some serious silverware to defend
in the Herne Bay Carnival. We still need ideas and willing
volunteers to put together a float for the Carnival and Holiday Week is
the ideal time to get cracking.
Sunday 15 August
sees the second race in the Late Summer series, and it's not too
late to start this series as we ran out of wind in the first race so
hardly anyone finished! Take part in the race or just
watch from the Clubhouse.
On
Wednesday 18 August the sixth
race in the Evening
Series starts at 7pm. Race results are available here.
The following
weekend (21-22 August) we have three races for the Kent
Trophy. That's one on the Saturday at 11am and the other two on
Sunday, with the first one also off at 11am and the second after lunch.
CLUB REGATTA
This take place on Saturday 28 August. The first race will be
at 12pm. Sign in by 11.15, briefing at 11.30.
There will be a number of short team races and some more unusual
events!
Mixed teams will be selected on the day with fast/medium/slow boats and
expert/intermediate/novice helms all with an equal chance of
contributing to their team’s success. If you don’t own a boat, or need
a crew but don’t have one, then no problem. We will try to get everyone
into a team and on the water.
Light refreshments will be available with Cream Teas in the afternoon.
Late Summer 3 is on Sunday 29 August, starting at 3pm.
This will be a special race in the Club's calendar since it is also
the Festival Race. The Festival Race is an opportunity for the
Club to get great publicity at the heart of the Herne Bay Festival
and in the centre of Herne Bay, as the race will be taking place close
to Herne Bay Pier. We will also have a dinghy display on the prom and Geoff Gambrill will be providing a commentary on the race. We need a
good turnout of members to make this a success so please support this
important promotional event.
We end the month on August Bank Holiday Monday with Late
Summer 4. The race starts at 3pm.
ODDS & ENDS
Work Party
We need to cut the grass on the boat park. Please come to the Club at 12.30
on Sunday 15 August and bring a petrol strimmer if you have one.

More details next month.

Thanks to Celia we have managed to acquire a pool table to add to the
attractions available in the Club.
